Kayla Benson is a second year music education student at UNCP. She participates in several ensembles including Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, and the Spirit of the Carolina’s Marching Band. Aside from these ensembles, Kayla is also an active member in the Esther G. Maynor Honors College.
Shelby Canady is from Burgaw, NC. She graduated from Pender High School in 2013. Shelby is a transfer student to UNCP; her past school was Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC. She is currently a music education major, and this is her first year at UNCP. When Shelby is not busy with schoolwork and practicing, she likes to watch movies, read books, hang out with friends, and enjoy spending time with her cat.
Samantha Hardison is a second year Music Education student from Warsaw, NC. She is currently an active member of the Spirit of the Carolinas Marching Band, UNCP Flute Ensemble, Esther G Maynor Honors College, and is first chair in the University Concert Band.
Alexi Hines is a first year Music Education Major at UNCP. She has written and performed multiple ensemble pieces for flute and woodwind ensembles. Alexi has performed for Sir James Galway at two of his master classes in Switzerland and North Carolina. She has traveled to 13 different countries and plans to finish her schooling in London, UK with a Doctoral Degree in Music Education.
Meggan Hollis received her BM in Music Education from UNC Greensboro in 2006 and her MA in Music Education from UNCP in 2012. She served as graduate assistant for the UNCP “Spirit of the Carolinas” Marching Band while completing her Master’s Degree, and she is currently the music librarian and marching band assistant at UNCP. Meggan is a member of the UNCP Flute Choir, and has performed on the flute and piccolo with the Coastal Symphony of Georgia in Brunswick, GA since 2013. Meggan and her husband Michael live in Lumberton, NC with their dogs, Grux and Bowie.
Liz Krostyne is a third year nursing student at UNC Pembroke. She is currently the flute section leader in the Spirit of the Carolinas Marching Band. When not in Pembroke, she lives in Jacksonville with her family. She enjoys reading, music, and cooking.
Holly Miller is a sophomore music education student at UNCP. She is a member of the concert band, marching band, and flute choir. She graduated from East Rowan high school, class of 2015. She believes in bright colours and lots of tie dye!
Caleb Ricks is a second year student at UNCP and is studying Music Business. Music has always played a huge part in his life and he wants to continue seeking goals that he has set for himself. Katie Hamilton lives in Memphis, TN. She was a member of the SOTC Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Flute Choir. In August 2017, Katie successfully won an audition and is now a member of the United States Marine Band.
Jordan Quinton is originally from Philadelphia. Jordan went to high school in Gates, NC before attending UNCP. Jordan performed in the UNCP Wind Ensemble, the Spirit of the Carolinas Marching Band, and the UNCP Flute Ensemble. Jordan also enjoys writing music when she is not playing her flute!
Nicki Nall is a 2016 graduate of the UNCP Music Department. Nicki served as the Drum Major for the Spirit of the Carolinas Marching Band and was the co-principal flute of the UNCP Wind Ensemble. Before attending UNCP, Nicki served in the United States Marine Band.
Barbara Catherine Lucas (Catie) is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is a fifth year music education major with an emphasis on the flute at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP). Lucas first studied the flute with Felicia MacNaught and then with Dr. Emily Orr. She is currently a student of Mrs. Sarah Busman at UNCP. Catie Lucas currently participates in the UNCP Flute Quartet and the University Jazz Ensemble. In the spring of 2012 she was a winner of the UNCP Concerto Competition where she performed the Andante and Rondo by Franz Doppler. Lucas competed at the 2010 Raleigh Area Flute Association’s annual Review and Contest, where she won her division and performed on the Review and Contest recital. Catie Lucas is a member of the National Association for Music Educators and also a member of the Tri-Sigma Delta Theta Chapter.
Emily Nixon has always had a love for music. A recent graduate of North Carolina at Pembroke with a Bachelor’s in Music Education (K-12), music has always been her passion. While at the university, she was involved in many enriching activities including being a Presidential Scholar, a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, part of Esther Maynard Honors College, and serving as the President of National Association of Music Educators. However, nothing pleased her more than to perform; at the UNC-Pembroke Concerto Competition, in Godspell: The Musical, as Mama Morton in Chicago, or the opportunity to play in the University Wind Ensemble and Flute Ensemble. She is now the Music Teacher at Brassfield Road Elementary, a K-5 school located in the heart of North Raleigh. She enjoys playing with her 3 year old son Ethan, reading historical novels, cooking, (and eating) and spending time with family and friends.
